European Parliament will investigate EU response to COVID

The European Parliament (EP) has launched a new special committee that will draw lessons from the COVID-19 pandemic and better prepare the EU for future crisis.

Set up in March 2022, the EP special committee on the Covid-19 pandemic started its work in April. It was mandated to prepare a report on how the European response to the pandemic and the lessons learned from the crisis can improve future EU action. The work of this committee will focus on 4 areas: health, a coordinated approach to democracy and fundamental rights, the socio-economic consequences of the pandemic and the crises, and the European Union and the world.

The duration of its mandate is 12 months, with possible extension. However, the members of the special committee are requested to conclude their report well ahead of the next European elections.

AGE logo AGE welcomes the setting up of this committee, which echoes our joint call with ETUC following the dramatic situation faced by many older people in residential settings during the pandemic. We hope the lessons learnt will ensure human rights in old age are equally protected also in times of crisis.
