AGE participated in the Second International Forum on the rights of older persons in Mexico City on 3rd June 2014, at which we presented the Legal & Institutional Guarantees for the rights of older persons and highlighted existing EU standards and protection mechanisms.
This event, which was organised from 3 to 6 June 2014 by the Government of Mexico City, through the Institute for the Care of Older Persons in Mexico City and the Latin American and Caribbean Demographic Centre (CELADE) – Population Division of the UN Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean-ECLAC, built on the outcomes of the First International Forum, which took place in 2012. It was organised within the framework of the implementation and follow-up of the San-Jose Charter on the rights of older persons in the Latin America and the Caribbean, adopted in 2012 at the Third Regional Inter-governmental Conference on Ageing in Latin America and the Caribbean. The Second Forum offered the opportunity to exchange knowledge and practices on the most relevant topics that have been part of the international debate on the rights of older persons during the last two years. It gathered participants from 27 countries and highlighted regional and national practices on autonomy, legal capacity, social services and inclusion of older persons.
Nena Georgantzi, Legal Officer of AGE, gave a keynote speech on the institutional and legal framework on the rights of older persons, focusing on examples and challenges from the European region. Nena’s presentation discussed patterns of vulnerability, violations and abuse, examined existing standards and protections gaps and reflected some potential avenues for future advocacy.
All presentations of the Forum are available online.
