On the 28th May 2014 AGE met with the Council Working Party on Human Rights (COHOM). This was the opportunity for an informal exchange with the Council group which decides the EU’s position in the UN Open-ended Working Group on Ageing (OEWGA).
AGE was represented in this meeting, by our Secretary General, Anne-Sophie Parent, one of our experts on human rights, Louise Richardson and Nena Georgantzi, Legal Officer. We presented our previous work on the rights of older people and dignified ageing as well as our strategic stand in the discussions for a strengthened protection of older people’s rights at the global level. We moreover asked to have an annual informal meeting prior to the OEWGA sessions and to exchange views to ensure that the position of the EU is informed by that of its older citizens.
AGE will continue collaborating with the EU’s External Action Agency (EEAS) to prepare the EU’s contribution to the OEWGA hoping also to ensure that the Council’s next Strategic Framework and Action Plan on human rights, which will start in 2015, will include reference to older people.
