More than 50 organisations have signed a joint statement on the Council’s Position Regarding the Revision of the Victims’ Rights Directive to urge all EU Member States to seriously consider the solutions proposed by the European Commission and Parliament.
On 13 June, the Council of the European Union adopted its position on the European Commission’s proposal for a revision of the Victims’ Rights Directive. Regrettably, this position rejected or diluted the initial proposals, turning obligations into mere options and thus undermining the scope of the Victims’ Rights Directive.
The Council’s position also contrasts with the proposals of the European Parliament’s report to build an effective legislative framework for coordinated support, protection and justice, recognising that the actions and costs involved in this process are investments in our future.
Standing in solidarity with all victims of all crimes, we join forces with Victim Support Europe’s call on all EU Member States and the European Parliament to stand together to honour commitments to fundamental human rights and dignity by adopting a strong Victims’ Rights Directive as the cornerstone legislation for all victims of crime!
