- Rolling out NCD prevention policies recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO)
- Designing EU financial instruments that support national investment in prevention
- Pursuing ‘EU flagship initiatives’ in areas that can deliver co-benefits for NCD prevention and other Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
- Identifying and rectifying EU barriers to the implementation of national NCD prevention strategies
- Establishing a pan-European system for data collection, policy evaluation and accountability
- Ensuring thorough inter-institutional coordination on health and well-being.
This proposal for a strategic framework is very timely and will hopefully be taken on board by the new European Commission to be appointed later on this year. In parallel, it should be underlined that the G20 declaration adopted in Osaka makes a clear reference to the control of NCDs (point 31).
As a member of the European Public Health Alliance, AGE has been consulted on the document during the drafting process: we insisted on the impact that NCDs have on older persons beyond the working age, as well as on the need to have health promotion and disease prevention measures targeting older persons. In the framework of the Sustainable Development Goals and the forthcoming Decade of Healthy Ageing, AGE will continue to support the work conducted by EPHA on NCDs.
