FATEC organises training session on ageism

FATEC logo FATEC, the Federation of Associations of Older People of Catalunya (Spain) in collaboration with the Superior Council of Scientific Investigations (CSIC) and Catalan Governments is organising an annual cycle of seminars on ‘Science, Society and Ageing’. In this frame, the first thematic session took advantage of the focus on the UN International Day of Older Persons and focused on ageism.

Mercè Mas, Board member of FATEC and member of AGE Task Force on Human Rights and explained the importance and prevalence of ageism at national, European and international levels, arguing that further action is needed. She moreover presented AGE Platform Europe as one of the main stakeholders aiming to combat ageism. Nena Georgantzi, AGE Policy Officer, gave an overview of the EU policy and legal framework on age discrimination and she explained the contribution of the United Nations, in particular the discussions around a new UN Convention which would act as an important anti-ageist tool, but also the work on the Independent Expert, Ms. Kornfeld-Matte. Magdalena Sellés Quintana, Lecturer at the University Ramon Llull presented some stereotypical images of older people in the media and opened a vivid debate about diversified portrayals of the older population. Xavier Puidollers i Noblom discussed some legal aspects of ageing, focusing on issues of autonomy, discrimination and guardianship.

The presentations followed a debate with the audience, which included approximately 40 people from FATEC’s network and beyond. Participants were interested in EU’s role in fighting ageism and what EU institutions can do put pressure on national governemnts to improve the situation in their country. They also brought forwarded examples of age discrimination and discussed ways to extend working lives.

The event tackled various forms of ageism, improved awareness about its pervasiveness in our society and opened a dialogue on how individuals and organisations can take a critical stand against it.
