Dementia is one of the major causes of disability and dependency among older people worldwide. Yet, family caregivers and direct care staff often lack knowledge of the symptoms, the changes implied by the condition, and possible interventions.
E-learning course and an educational app for carers
This is why, our member, the Spanish Confederation of Older People’s Associations (CEOMA) supported the AppForDem project. With a consortium of educational partners and civil society organisations, they designed the training curriculum “Specialised care for people with dementia”. The curriculum, based on a centred-person care approach, is delivered through an e-learning course, and a multilingual educational app “Dementia and daily living” (available for free in the Android and Apple stores).
Successful pilots in four European countries
The app and the e-learning course have been piloted in Denmark, Romania, Italy, and Spain with target groups. The participants concluded that both resources were very suitable to the training needs of caregivers of people with dementia.
“I find both the app and the e-learning course very useful for formal carers and/or students, either to update their knowledge or improve their qualifications and for non-formal carers to help them improve their care for a person with dementia”.
