The European Semester Alliance, a broad coalition bringing together 16 major EU civil society organisations (CSOs) – including AGE Platform Europe – and trade unions, sent its analysis of the Commission’s recent Annual Growth Survey 2016 to the President of the European Commission, Mr Juncker. The Alliance also addressed some further proposals on how to deliver a more democratic, social and sustainable Europe.
In its letter, the coalition reminds the EU legal obligations – enshrined in the Treaties and the European Charter of Fundamental Rights – to ensure people’s right to live in dignity, and further warns that the Semester’s refocus on cost-cutting measures can aggravate social inequalities within and among EU member states.
