AGE letter to President Barroso calling to refocus the European Semester on Europe 2020, October 2013

In line with the EC communication on the social dimension of the Economic and Monetary Union, which identifies social and economic divergences among Members States as a major challenge, AGE calls on the European Commission to refocus the European Semester on Europe 2020 social objectives.

In its Communication on the social dimension of European Monetary Union (EMU) adopted on 2 October 2013, the Commission rightly points out that both social and economic divergences among Member States represent a major challenge for EMU. AGE welcomes the first proposals to deepen social integration, in particular a new scoreboard to allow for better and earlier identification of major employment and social problems.

However, AGE members call on EU leaders to go further and address properly the social dimension of Europe 2020 by mainstreaming all its social objectives in the economic processes of the European Semester.
