We are joining forces with more than 220 organisations worldwide to urge for the establishment of an ad-hoc group to advance the work of the United Nations General Assembly’s Open-Ended Working Group on Ageing ahead of its 12th meeting. This group should be tasked to commence the drafting of the main normative elements of an international legal instrument for the protection of older people’s rights.

“We believe that the OEWGA will greatly benefit from commencing the drafting of a proposed binding instrument without delay in an open and inclusive platform that places the participation of older persons, their knowledge, expertise and experiences at the centre of discussions”, we state in our joint letter.

Civil society organizations (like NGOs), national human rights institutions and other bodies including equality bodies, universities, councils of seniors at local level, universities of third age, health and care facilities and others are invited to sign the letter preferably before 31 December 2021.
