Fundamental rights in the EU: Where to next? – Joint NGO statement

Human rights in EUAhead of a European Parliament’s public hearing on the situation of fundamental rights in the European Union on 30 March, a coalition of social NGOs, including AGE Platform Europe, issued a joint press statement taking stock of the situation, highlighting gaps and making proposals for next steps to ensure respect of fundamental rights in the EU.

The members of this coalition are: AGE Platform Europe; European Disability Forum; European Network Against Racism; European Youth Forum; European Women’s Lobby; ILGA-Europe – the European Region of the International Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Intersex Association; International Rehabilitation Council for Torture Victims; Save the Children EU Office and Social Platform.

The hearing (read AGE report here), which followed reports by the EU Agency for Fundamental Rights (FRA), initiatives by the European Commission and the Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs (LIBE) draft report on the situation of fundamental rights (rapporteur MEP Laura Ferrara), brought together institutional actors, researchers and civil society organisations to discuss EU’s recent initiatives to protect and promote fundamental rights and the rule of law and on the EU institutional framework in this area.
