Past activities to mark the EU Day of Solidarity between generations

In 2021... 

EU_Green_Paper-AGE_response-visualWe shed light on age equality as being the backbone of solidarity between generations, and call for the adoption of an EU Age Equality Strategy.

We responded to the EU Green Paper on Ageing, stressing that cohesion and wellbeing can only grow if we guarantee equal rights at all stages of life.

In 2020...

Together with the European Youth Forum (EYF), we called for all generations to join forces and seize the momentum of the current COVID-19 crisis to reinvent completely the way our societies are functioning. We drafted recommendations to EU and national decision-makers to address the long-term consequences of COVID-19 for all generations and tackle climate at the same time as the risks of future pandemics.

We also seized the momentum of the EU Day to pay tribute to the many young and older people that were joining forces to address COVID-19 crisis across Europe.


In 2019...

We contributed to EU event on "Solidarity between generations: a focus on ageing workers". The conference addressed the potential of the solidarity between generations as a way to ensure a fairer and more sustainable labour market in a context of ageing population. Read our event report

AGE General Assembly and Annual Conference in June 2019 focused on intergenerational solidarity and the demographic and climate challenges. Read our press release: 'Life is intergenerational by nature and so should EU action!'


In 2018...

For the 2018 edition, AGE and the European Youth Forum joined forces to call for more participation of the younger and older generations in the democratic debate and policymaking and promote age diversity in all areas of society, as we highlighted in a joint press release and during a symposium organized by AGE member organisation ESU and the Office of International IDEA to the European Union on ‘Involving Generations in Dialogue for Democracy’ on 24 April 2018.


In 2017...

Together with​ the European Parliament Intergroup on Ageing and Intergenerational Solidarity and the EPP and ALDE groups, we organised a breakfast debate at the European Parliament on active ageing and intergenerational solidarity at work. The agenda of this event included a presentation by the European Social Partners of their framework agreement on active ageing and an intergenerational approach and a discussion on what the EU and civil society can do to support active ageing and intergenerational solidarity.

Our joint press release called for promoting more age diversity and developing life-cycle approaches at the workplace.


In 2016...

We organised a joint event with the European Parliament Intergroup on Active Ageing, Intergenerational Solidarity and Family policies and the European Youth Forum to shed light on the persisting age stereotypes and ingrained ageism. The event showcased widespread experiences of ageism at both ends of the life spectrum. with the many disadvantages and obstacles that still prevent the equal participation of the young and the older generations across the European Union.

In 2015...

AGE cooperated with the Confederation of Family Organisations (COFACE), Eurochild, the European Women's Lobby (EWL) and the European Youth Forum (EYF) to issue a joint press statement recalling the importance of bringing generations together to combat age stereotypes and discrimination and promote the inclusion and participation of all age group in all areas of society. AGE aimed to raise awareness of the positive impact of intergenerational links in the context of population ageing and of the key role each generation plays - and should be empowered to play - to ensure a sustainable future for people of all ages. In 2014...

  • AGE joined forces with some MEP candidates from major European political parties to commit to promoting greater solidarity and cooperation between generations during the next European Parliament's mandate and issue a joint press release.
  • AGE members organised events all over the EU 


In 2013...

  • The coalition of European Organisations involved in the promotion of the European Year 2012 for Active Ageing and Soliarity between Generations encouraged their members and the other European organisations to organise awareness-raising events on the need of greater intergenerational solidarity in an ageing society. Those initiatives are collected every year so as to give them more visibility and inspire further actions/projects.
  • This year again, the EY2012 Coalition sent a joint press release to mark the EU Day and highlight its key message
  • In 2013, AGE and Eurochild organised a roundtable at the European Parliament on the topic of Grandparents as carers on 24th April.
  • The coalition also supported and promoted the European project Generations@school
