Since 2018, AGE has been involved involved in an awareness-raising campaign  to attract the attention of politicians at European, national, regional and local levels on how to rethink the concept of solidarity and coorperation between the generations.

The cornerstone of this campaign is the European Day of Solidarity between Generations that has been celebrated on 29th April since 2009 (and officially proclaimed by the Slovene Presidency of the EU in April 2008).

Objective of this campaign

Make the European Union more age-friendly and better adapted to our ageing population, as well as have intergenerational solidarity high on the EU agenda.

Past activities

In 2017...
Together with the European Parliament Intergroup on Ageing and Intergenerational Solidarity and the EPP and ALDE groups, we organised a breakfast debate at the European Parliament on active ageing and intergenerational solidarity at work. The agenda of this event included a presentation by the European Social Partners of their framework agreement on active ageing and an intergenerational approach and a discussion on what the EU and civil society can do to support active ageing and intergenerational solidarity.
Our joint press release called for promoting more age diversity and developing life-cycle approaches at the workplace.

In 2016...
We organised a joint event with the European Parliament Intergroup on Active Ageing, Intergenerational Solidarity and Family policies and the European Youth Forum to shed light on the persisting age stereotypes and ingrained ageism. The event showcased widespread experiences of ageism at both ends of the life spectrum. with the many disadvantages and obstacles that still prevent the equal participation of the young and the older generations across the European Union.

In 2015...
AGE cooperated with the Confederation of Family Organisations (COFACE), Eurochild, the European Women's Lobby (EWL) and the European Youth Forum (EYF) to issue a joint press statement recalling the importance of bringing generations together to combat age stereotypes and discrimination and promote the inclusion and participation of all age group in all areas of society. AGE aimed to raise awareness of the positive impact of intergenerational links in the context of population ageing and of the key role each generation plays - and should be empowered to play - to ensure a sustainable future for people of all ages. • The coalition of European Organisations involved in the promotion of the European Year 2012 for Active Ageing and Soliarity between Generations encouraged their members and the other European organisations to organise awareness-raising events on the need of greater intergenerational solidarity in an ageing society. Those initiatives are collected every year so as to give them more visibility and inspire further actions/projects.
  • This year again, the EY2012 Coalition sent a joint press release to mark the EU Day and highlight its key message
  • In 2013, AGE and Eurochild organised a roundtable at the European Parliament on the topic of Grandparents as carers on 24th April.
