As the United Nations (UN) General Assembly is currently negotiating the resolution that defines the mandate of the Open-Ended Working Group on Ageing (OEWG), civil society has joined forces to ensure an impactful session in 2016.
AGE Platform Europe co-signed a letter addressed to the Chair of the UN OEWG, aiming to influence the ongoing discussions about the next session of the Open-Ended Working Group on Ageing. This joint action, endorsed by more than 100 organisations, aims to draw attention to the need to:
- Reaffirm the full mandate of the OEWG on Ageing as agreed by the General Assembly under previous resolutions,
- Ensure the completion of the OEWG on Ageing’s task of compiling proposals for the main elements of a new legal instrument to be presented to the General Assembly,
- Ensure the continuation of the work of the OEWG on Ageing with a 7th session in 2016.
The letter was also shared with the UN focal point on ageing and the Group of Friends of Older People, which brings together UN Member States that want to work together to move forward the UN agenda on the rights of older persons. The undersigned civil society organisations will moreover share the letter with national governments which will draft adopt the UN resolution that deals with ageing and the rights of older persons.
