AGE contribution to the SPC debate on the future of the OMC on social inclusion, pensions and health and long-term care - April 2011
The Social OMC has evolved a lot since it was introduced a decade ago, and although its objectives had not been fully achieved, the method has demonstrated an important added value by increasing awareness of both the multi-dimensional nature of poverty and social exclusion and the common challenges faced by member states in reforming their social protection systems. It also provided governments with opportunities for mutual learning among themselves and for regular exchanges with relevant stakeholders at national and EU level, in particular with civil society.
Looking forward, the Social OMC – based on common objectives and indicators and developed in close cooperation with external stakeholders including people experiencing poverty and social exclusion – should be strengthened and used to mainstream EU social inclusion and social protection objectives into the Europe 2020 Strategy.
