AGE has responded to the Fundamental Rights Agency's consultation on the Fundamental Rights Agency’s Annual Activity Report 2008 and Annual Report 2009, in which it makes a number of general observations on the two reports and proposes concrete suggestions for a better consideration of the age ground in the Agency’s ongoing and future work.
Combating age discrimination is an important aspect in ensuring human rights. AGE considers that the Agency has the means to play a substantive role in raising awareness of age discrimination and increasing knowledge and understanding on the many related issues of interest and concern to Europe’s growing older populations.
The demographic changes which our societies are undergoing reinforces the importance of the Agency developing a more comprehensive approach to the age ground in its future activities. Together with disability, the age ground is the most often cited ground of discrimination. It is also the most complex and Member States are struggling with the challenges it poses to their equality frameworks.
AGE is committed to engaging with its non-discrimination experts in an ongoing and open dialogue on fundamental rights and will feed in its accumulated expertise and advice to FRA, through the Fundamental Rights Platform, at every available opportunity.
