“The crisis will have such a strong and long term impact on our social protection systems that we fear that gender inequalities will increase in the future if nothing is done now to tackle the specific barriers and challenges that women face throughout their lives”. With this statement issued to mark International Women’s Day, AGE and the EWL are calling on Member States and the Commission to pay more attention to the impact of the crisis on women of all ages. Women already face an increased risk of poverty due to prevailing gender inequalities and the crisis is weakening their precarious situation even further. In this context and looking at the reforms proposed by governments to exit from the crises, AGE and the EWL calls for greater awareness, attention and policies to advance women’s right to equality in all spheres of their lives. Within this context, the EU 2020 Strategy should provide more robust measures to guarantee gender equality and should include targets on poverty reduction broken down by gender and age groups ensure that policy makers keep track of and respond to the evolving situation of women in the aftermath of the crisis and the upcoming reforms of our social protection systems.
