Equinet has prepared an opinion on ‘Tackling Ageism and Discrimination' which it has released as a publication in support of the 2012 European Year for Active Ageing and Solidarity between Generations, It aims to:
-
Enhance the policy context for the work of the equality bodies in promoting equality and combating discrimination on the age ground in all areas of life.
-
Engage equality bodies at European and Member State level so that their experience can inform new commitments, directions and priorities for active ageing.
-
Present a real and lasting challenge to ageism and discrimination and the manner in which these phenomena diminish older people and block their contribution to society.
This Equinet perspective focuses in particular on the situation and experience of older people and on the diversity of older people. To enable and inform this perspective, an Equinet survey of the work of equality bodies on the age ground was conducted.
It concludes that the EY2012 offers a valuable opportunity totake stock of the barriers presented by ageism to the gial of active ageing, and that equality bodies can play an important role in addressing these issues and in enhancing the focus on ageism and discrimination within the inititatives developed as part of EY2012,
