Committee of the Regions

The Committee of the Regions was set up in 1994 as an advisory body composed of nominated representatives of Europe's regional and local authorities to ensure that regional and local identities and interests were respected within the EU.

The work of the Committee is divided into 6 sections on the following topics:

  • Territorial Cohesion
  • Economic and Social Policy
  • Sustainable Development
  • Culture and Education
  • Constitutional Affairs and European Governance
  • External Relations

The Committee of Regions has to be consulted on matters that concern local and regional policies such as employment policy, the environment, infrastructure, transport, education and health. It can also present opinions on any legislative proposal with important regional or local implications.
