A Manifesto for an Age-Friendly European Union

The European Parliament Intergroup on Ageing and Intergenerational Solidarity and the EY2012 Coalition of stakeholders are calling for actors from many different sectors to seize the opportunity of the European Year 2012  for Active Ageing and Solidarity between Generations to join forces at all levels to promote an age-friendly European Union in which all generations are valued and enabled to take part.

Ahead of the of the European Year 2012 for Active Ageing and Solidarity between Generations (EY2012), the Intergroup on Ageing and Intergenerational Solidarity is holding a meeting today in order to reflect together with the Members of the EY2012 Coalition and other stakeholders on how to build synergies during the upcoming European Year.

On that occasion, the EY2012 Coalition running campaign to promote the European Year 2012 will be launching its Manifesto for an Age-Friendly European Union. This Manifesto presents the Decalogue of the age-friendly society and includes a number of recommendations to the EU and stakeholders at national and local level to achieve an age-friendly European Union by 2020.The objective of this political statement is to encourage stakeholders to build on the momentum created by the European Year 2012 to create partnerships at EU and national level in order to promote active ageing and solidarity between generations.

“The EY2012 comes up very timely in a time of growing concerns about demographic upheaval and the sustainability of our current EU social models. The EU Year offers the opportunity to mobilize all actors and encourage them to reflect on joint actions to address one of the biggest worldwide challenges of the coming decades. This opportunity should not be missed,” says Anne-Sophie Parent, Secretary-General of AGE-Platform Europe, leader of the EY2012 Coalition.
