On the 11th May, the members of the Intergroup on Ageing and Intergenerational Solidarity met Commissioner Lazlo Andor in the European Parliament. He announced that the European Commission was working actively on a proposal concerning the European Year 2012.
Elizabeth Lynne was hosting the meeting and reminded to the Commissioner the importance of working on the question of elder abuse and the quality of long-term care services. The other MEPs attending the meeting stressed the importance of working on anti-discrimination issues, and especially regarding discrimination on age.
Anne-Sophie Parent introduced the European Charter of rights and responsibilities of older people in need of long-term care and assistance and stressed the need for mandatory quality standards for the care of older people at the European level.
The NGOs member of the coalition on a European Year on active ageing and intergenerational solidarity together with the co-chairs of the Intergroup reminded to Commissioner Andor the importance of promoting Intergenerational Solidarity, especially during the European Year 2012.
