March: Monthly Update on the European Year 2012

29 April 2012: Let's all celebrate the EU Day of Solidarity between Generations !

The European Day of Solidarity between Generations took place on 29 April. For several years now, AGE Platform Europe and the EY2012 Coalition have been promoting that Day as part of their awareness-raising campaign to encourage politicians at European, national, regional and local levels to promote a society for all ages and to support civil society initiatives on intergenerational cooperation.

Activities were organized end of April to mark the Day with a special emphasis given that 2012 is the European Year for Active Ageing and Solidarity between Generations.

Get involved events launch EY2012 in several Member States

Several Member States organised their Get Involved in March as official launch of the EY2012 in their country.  These events involving key politicians, civil society organisations and other stakeholders took different formats and were often an opportunity to present the national programme for the EY2012. A few more launch events were organised in April.

Intergenerational Schools Project « generations@school »

As of 1st March, schools in Europe were encouraged to foster intergenerational dialogue by inviting older people to meet young pupils around the date of the European Day of Solidarity between Generations on April 29th in order to share experience, fears and hopes for the future and reflect together on how to create a better society for all generations. A resource kit - aimed mainly at primary schools - was developed in all EU languages to help teachers organise such debates as part of their curriculum. The most innovative projects were selected for awards.

EY2012 Journalists’ conference

The two-day Journalists' Conference on the European Year for Active Ageing and Solidarity between Generations, organized by the European Commission on March 19th-20th in Brussels, attracted over 80 journalists, experts and EU officials from 22 Member States to discuss the perception of ageing by the public and the media in Europe, the way European journalists report on demographic ageing, and the vision they promote of older people.

The conference included a panel session on “age as a state of mind”, in which AGE President, Marjan Sedmak, who was journalist, was invited to take part. This was followed by a series of interactive workshops with high-level experts covering four topics: innovation and technology, dependency and care, work and pensions, and politics and society.

During the workshops, the following issues (among others) were highlighted:

· the role of the media in fighting stereotypes and avoiding attacking one prejudice with another,

· the need to create more opportunities of communication, interaction and cooperation between the different generations to avoid prejudices,

· in the field of employment, the need to adapt working conditions and further explore the balance between “fairness” and “effectiveness”,

· the strong gender dimension in the employment and pension fields,

· the importance of informal care and the current decrease in volunteering activities,…

László Andor, EU Commissioner for Employment, Social Affairs and Inclusion, also came on stage for a Q&A session with participants, in which he pointed out the issues of pensions and youth unemployment as two emergency issues and highlighted added value of the EU in allowing long-term strategy to tackle long-term challenges and stressed the role of the media in helping achieve a better understanding of the issues at stake.
